SUMMARY:River Herring & Eel Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe annual Long Island Volunteer River Herring & Eel Survey is one of Long Island’s longest running community science projects. Started in 2006\, the survey engages community volunteer scientists to monitor runs of migratory river herring and American eels in rivers and streams across Long Island. The survey\, organized by Seatuck and our partners at the Long Island Sound Study\, Peconic Estuary Program and South Shore Estuary Reserve – aims to find the waterways where “remnant” runs of river herring still exist and then to monitor the size and timing of those runs. \nParticipants in the survey are asked to commit to surveying a local waterway from mid-March through mid-May. The survey protocol involves visiting a neighborhood river or stream and spending 15 minutes looking for river herring or signs of their presence. The visits can occur daily\, weekly or as often as possible. All data is good data – the more trained eyes we have on the water\, the better! Observations and information from the survey visit are then submitted through an easy-to-use on-line application on your computer or mobile device and automatically becomes part of our study. \nRegister here to attend the training webinar.

SUMMARY:Using Trail Cameras to Survey Long Island's Wild Mammals
DESCRIPTION:Janet Pesaturo\, author of Camera Trapping Guide: Tracks\, Sign and Behavior of Eastern Wildlife. \nIn this one-hour Zoom presentation\, followed by Q/A\, Janet will introduce the basics of trail cameras: how they work\, how to choose one\, how to set them up\, and how to deter theft. She will then discuss reading the landscape to determine smart camera placement and conclude the program with an introduction to wildlife tracking and how to use track and sign observations to refine camera placement. Species of particular interest to the Long Island Mammal Survey will be used as examples. \nJanet Pesaturo has pursued her interest in life sciences and animal behavior in a variety of ways. A former psychiatrist\, she completed a master’s degree in conservation biology late in life and now focuses on her wildlife tracking and camera trapping obsessions. She has a Level III Track & Sign certificate from CyberTracker. In 2018 she published “Camera Trapping Guide: Tracks\, Sign and Behavior of Eastern Wildlife.” \nThis presentation is free\, but registration is required.

Seatuck in partnership with Long Island Sound Study\, Peconic Estuary Partnership\, South Shore Estuary Reserve\, NY Sea Grant\, and the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area is hosting this bioblitz to better understand the ecological community and biodiversity around Long Island\, and then to use that information in conservation and preservation efforts! \nThe Long Island Coastal Bioblitz will be held “virtually\,” allowing participants to record their observations using the iNaturalist app. All a participant would need to do is take a picture of any species they are looking at\, plant or animal\, load it into the iNaturalist app\, and the species will automatically be added to the Long Island Coastal Bioblitz! There will also be prizes for participants who log the most observations over the week-long event! \nWe will be hosting a training webinar on May 23rd\, from 6:00 – 7:30pm to introduce participants to the iNaturalist app and the bioblitz format. Attendance is not mandatory to participate in the bioblitz but it is recommended. Registration for this webinar is required.
